Photographer D. J. Hinman will hold an exhibit entitled “Japan Is Calling; the 47 Prefectures” at Roonee 247 Fine Arts in Tokyo on April 16-21, 2024. The exhibit features black-and-white film photographs from the backyards of Japan.
D. J. Hinman spent several years wandering through the 47 prefectures of Japan, mostly by local train, to explore the diversity of the country. The result is this exhibit, which is arranged in four sections. Back roads Japan explores remote destinations and back roads, fertile territory for curiosity. One-man Densha looks into a unique feature of local train travel where 40-50 year-old cars are operated by a single crewman and travel slowly between small towns. Memorable train trips recounts one trip by one-man densha on Shikoku Island with mountains shrouded in fog;
another full-day trip by one-man densha in Tohoku with dramatic scenery along the Japan Sea coast; and a 3-day trip along the Pacific Coast through the area of devastation from the tsunami
and earthquake in 2011. After dark features street photography in small towns and reveals that night life occurs indoors so vacant streets become the focus.
Collectively, the photographs in this exhibit reveal that, although Japan is a small country geographically, the local cultures in the prefectures are remarkably diverse.
D. J. Hinman is an avid film photographer with 30 years of experience behind the camera, first in New York and later in Japan. He shoots only in black-and-white film, develops the negatives
himself and prints them by hand on silver gelatin paper. He has held 13 solo exhibits in Tokyo and one 2-person exhibit in Nepal. D. J. Hinman has lived in Tokyo for 20 years.
