Chris Killip: Exhibition

MonoVisions Black & White Photo Contest 2025

Galerie f5,6 presents a selection of photographs made by Chris Killip (*1946, Douglas, Isle of Man) over the course of 25 years in Huddersfield, Tyneside, Wallsend and the Isle of Man. What came into being is the portrait of the British northeast and its inhabitants, which now serves as evidence of the areas recent past marked by economic decline and the ensuing social consequences. The images have a distinct political connotation, presented as strong, complex and at the same time elegant photographs. Chris Killip is not dealing with the subject as a journalist on site, but as a local. During the time of creation he worked in his fathers pub and built long lasting friendships. The result is a warm, but also objective and raw portrayal of the region. His careful approach might just be the reason for the exceptional result and also testimony of his knowing about the importance of his work.

Chris Killips lives and works in the USA. Since 1991 he teaches at Harvard University at the Department of Visual Studies. His works are part of numerous collections (MOMA, New York; Museum Folkwang, Essen; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam) and one of the last museum shows was on display at the Tate Britain, April to September 2014. Steidl will publish the second edition of his book Seacoal in November 2015.
