Ruth Bernhard: Five Decades

Ruth Bernhard: Five Decades

MonoVisions Black & White Photo Contest 2025

The gallery is pleased to announce that 29 photographic works by Ruth Bernhard have recently been added to the permanent collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum. The museum holds one of the world’s preeminent collections of photographs and has become an important center for the study of the history and art of photography. Bernhard joins the ranks of the 20th Century’s most important female photographers, standing next to such luminaries as Dorothea Lange and Imogen Cunningham. To be included in such an esteemed collection ensures that Bernhard’s importance as a photographer will be secured for years to come.

To celebrate, we would like to present a select collection of Bernhard’s work that we feel displays her masterful intention of seeing nature’s innate life force and spirit within the structure of the female figure. These photographs are an elegant accomplishment of light revealing form by a master photographer.
