Fine art photogapher Karla Guerrero presents her latest project, “Blanco Universo,” a visual diary that explores the complex psychological condition of “mental emptiness” and the therapeutic method of “grounding.” Through her intimate and poetic vision, Guerrero uses photography to reflect on the alterations in visual perception and mental health.
Through a series of black and white polaroids, Blanco Universo invites viewers to explore scenarios altered by “mental emptiness.” This condition causes a disconnection from the
environment, making it difficult to recognize ideas and recover everyday memories.
Guerrero visually captures these forms of perceptual emptiness while analyzing the impact of the therapeutic method of “grounding,” which focuses attention on nearby stimuli such
as what is seen, heard, and felt. This approach highlights its importance in preventing persistent disconnection and its consequences on mental health.
The Blanco Universo project has been awarded with the prestigious “Jóvenes Creadores” grant issued by the Sistema de Apoyo a la Creación y Proyectos Culturales (SACPC) in México, in its 2023 edition. This distinction reinforces the relevance and impact of Guerrero’s work in the contemporary art scene, underscoring her commitment to profound and universal themes of human experience.
