Gary Beeber is an award-winning American photographer/filmmaker who has exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and Europe. Solo exhibitions include two at Generous Miracles Gallery NYC and “Personalities” (summer, 2017) at Griffin Museum of Photography, Winchester, MA. Beeber’s work has also been included in juried exhibitions throughout the country. Among Fortune 500 companies who collect his work are Pfizer Pharmaceutical, Goldman Sachs and Chase Bank.
– How and when did you become interested in photography?
I grew up in the Midwest in the 1950’s and some of my earliest memories are of drawing pictures. When I was 12 years old my parents bought me a little camera and I actively started taking photographs.
– Is there any artist/photographer who inspired your art?
As I grew up I became aware and inspired by the work of Edward Hopper, Eugene Atget and Diane Arbus.
– Why do you work in black and white rather than colour?
As I photograph, I see the images as black and white. Black and white achieves a melancholy and timeless look that I cannot achieve with color.
– How much preparation do you put into taking a photograph/series of photographs?
I’m sort of a hunter/gatherer, I find subject matter that speaks out to me. I’ll often see something as I drive around and either stop or return to take pictures. Sometimes I return several times. Although the process is digital (and fast) I put time into thinking about each image. I’ll start by making sketches (if you will) with my iPhone, then once I feel that I’m going in the right direction I’ll start using the camera. As I work I’ll scroll through the images and eliminate what’s not working.
Where is your photography going? What projects would you like to accomplish?
My photography is about artistic growth. I would like to produce a traveling exhibition and a book of my “Sylvester Manor” imagery.
