Interview with Kaushik Dolui

MonoVisions Black & White Photo Contest 2025

How and when did you become interested in photography?

In my childhood days, I did the drawing and painting, later in my mid-twenties I developed an interest in photography .I joined in a short course in photography at that time. Later I participated in different photographic salons under FIAP and PSA patronages and won many awards/acceptances over the time and it is still continuing and received Excellence FIAP Honors from Federation de l’Art Photographique in 2009.

Is there any artist/photographer who inspired your art?

There were so many, from whom I was influenced, In the beginning there are some that leave me something to think about, namely Henri Cartier-Bresson, Ansel Adams, Raghu Rai etc. Later we have lots of freedom when it comes to digital technology in photography. The difference between painting and photography is much reduced in our days. Every day I see lots of images/paintings and in our time it is difficult to say from whom I was inspired.

Why do you work in black and white rather than color?

I always believe Black and white photography always lends a timeless impression to the images. On the other hand color aturated images can confuse the eye where as Black and white images can enhance the subject (what I want to show the viewer) without any color disturbance but rich vibrant color always attracts me.

How much preparation do you put into taking a photograph/series of photographs?

The first thing I do is to find a concept and sometimes it came to my mind when I am simply walking on a road. I always try to feel everything very closely as a sensitive person in our day to day life. Later I capture or try to construct the same (series) through digital editing. Many ideas come and go, some leave deep impression what motivates me to do something in future. Frequently I stayed in the deep Himalaya during our trekking/expedition in my early days and now I realized it has intense impact on me particularly in my creative thought process.

Where is your photography going? What projects would you like to accomplish?

I always fascinated by the beauty of mountains as well as the seas and here in “Amalgamation” series, I try to match the both through creative process using less technique as if it seems straight images. Presence of human elements in some images give a different feelings, As the colors of mountain and sea are not complementary to each other I go straight to black and white.
