Enzo Sellerio is unquestionably one of the most authoritative voices of the Italian photographers of the second half of the twentieth century whose personal experiences helped identify the landscape and social dimensions of their land. For fifty years Sellerio has given us the accomplished picture of a Sicily not yet overrun by a globalisation of customs and thought. He has provided us with straightforward knowledge of his native land, almost as if he himself, with his studies and in person, had identified with that land. The photographs in this anthology offer further confirmation of how photography for Sellerio was an extension of his studies, hunting out not only objects but also and above all looking for emotions, atmosphere, memories that artifacts and photographs transmit in time. And if his books see the light as “a collection of trouvailles, spontaneously accumulated. A reflection of my life, or at least of the best part of it”, as he himself said, they also offer a new occasion to take another look at an important chapter in the photographic literature of Italy.
